The Dover Prize is a biennial award that supports innovation and experimentation in the arts.

A Two-Year bursary for artistic development
The winner of The Dover Prize receives a £10,000 bursary, paid over two years. This funding is designed to give artists the time, space and financial support needed to think, research, experiment and grow their practice.
Unlike many other prizes, The Dover Prize places equal value on process and outcome, offering a rare chance for artists to explore bold new ideas without the pressure of immediate results.
A focus on Darlington’s cultural landscape
One of the unique aspects of The Dover Prize is its connection to Darlington’s cultural identity. The winning artist is expected to premiere a new piece of work in the town at the end of the award period.

Who can apply?
The prize is open to UK-based creative practitioners working in visual arts disciplines such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, film, performance, installation, and digital art.
Applicants must meet at least three of the following professional criteria to be eligible to apply:
- The artist is regularly making and exhibiting artwork
- The artist has received professional grants or awards
- The artist is involved in organising self-created professional opportunities, for example running an artist-led studio or project
- The artist has a degree in visual or applied arts at undergraduate and/or post-graduate level
- The artist has been commissioned by a public institution
- The artist’s work has been previously purchased by a public collection
- The artist’s work has been previously reviewed or featured in an art journal, magazine,
- newspaper or on-line curated platform
- The artist is represented by a gallery
- The artist has taken part in a recognised residency or artist placement scheme
A legacy of supporting artists
The Dover Prize was established in 1998 through a bequest from Peggy Nonhebel (née Dover). It is managed by Point North, a charity, grant maker and community foundation based in County Durham. The award reflects a long-standing commitment to supporting artists and strengthening the role of the arts in the community.
