Summary
I propose to develop a series of temporary, evolving public artworks across Darlington that fuse performative presence, environmental responsiveness, and sculptural experimentation. These interventions—part sculpture, part live research—will unfold in real time, engaging directly with place, people, and chance.

Concept & Intent
At the heart of this project is the idea of public art as a living process, not a fixed object. I am interested in testing how temporary installations, activated through performative gestures, material transformations, or public interactions, can shift perceptions of space and locality.

The project will manifest as a series of experimental works across public sites—open parks, disused lots, underpasses, and town squares. Each will be developed in response to its context and will include a live or participatory element: this could be a sculptural form that slowly evolves in front of passersby, a time-based installation that decays or alters through natural forces, or an open studio in public space where the work is visibly made in situ. This project will unfold as an open-ended, performative research residency. I will embed myself in the rhythms and routines of Darlington, using walking, mapping, dialogue, and material play as key methods. The aim is not to impose meaning but to co-create it with the landscape and its people.

I will:

Work with ephemeral, tactile materials—clay, fabric, found objects, local debris—that respond to local history and ecology.

Set up temporary public “labs”: open-air making spaces where passersby can witness or contribute to evolving pieces.

Document the works through film, drawing, and writing, building an evolving digital archive accessible to the public.
The Dover Prize Fund has its roots in Darlington. Please explain how you believe your work might enhance and raise the profile of the creative arts in the area. (200 words)
Darlington’s shifting urban identity and mix of civic heritage, post-industrial remnants, and green corridors make it a potent canvas for public experimentation. The town’s strong railway legacy is also a metaphor for movement, process, and transition—core themes of my work.

I see this as an opportunity to connect with the town’s present through its textures, residues, and overlooked spaces. I hope to highlight what is temporary, vulnerable, or in flux in Darlington’s landscape, just as much as what is established.

‘Stallard Sculptures’ are an International concern combining their significant experience in public art management, fabrication, installation, and creative knowledge for major large scale site-specific sculptures. My works are site-specific sculptures, involving design systems that respond to the properties I discover when researching and developing concepts for each particular commission. I have a full working experience of 35 years creating public artworks. Through these projects have conducted research and development within architectural and engineering practices, and engaged in design collaborations with urban planners and councils in the United Kingdom, Europe, and for several years abroad in Canada and the U.S. I have had extensive community consultation experience ranging from youth group workshops, live events, school workshop projects, community involvement with cultural and historic counterpoints within conceptual frameworks relevant to each commission brief. My professional practice with Public Art has led to working knowledge of community arts, collaborative projects with other Artists, Designers, Architects, Engineers, Steering groups and Project Teams and the co-ordination of these type of works with schedules towards completion, along with the responsibility for realizing these larger concepts. My residency work is extensive including most areas of the British Isles Europe and the U.S. which has developed a thorough working experience with workshops, community projects, youth groups etc.. Previous teaching experience at a Part time level has evolved an all-round good experience with schools and all necessary documentation.
