If awarded the £10,000 Dover Prize bursary, I would undertake an ambitious two-year project deepens my exploration of industrial materials, queer embodiment and the politics of labour.
Building on my recent residency at Blackhorse Workshop, where I experimented with steel engraving, latex casting and plasma cutting, I aim to expand these techniques into a body of installation and sound-based works.
The bursary would fund access to specialist fabrication facilities and an artist studio, materials and mentorship, which would give me the perfect conditions to refine my technical skills and push the boundaries of my practice.
I plan to create a series of installations that opposes the rigidity of industrial fabrication with the fluidity of queer identity. I am interested in challenging traditional narratives around strength and vulnerability. I plan to do so by creating large-scale installations that act as sets for performances and activation.
Additionally, I intend to engage with local communities in Darlington, drawing parallels between the town’s industrial heritage and contemporary discussions around labour and identity. Through workshops and collaborative projects, I want to create spaces for dialogue and shared creative expression.
This award would be transformative, and provide me with the resources and platform to elevate my practice and contribute meaningfully to contemporary conversations at the intersection of art, identity and politics.
Darlington’s industrial heritage and working-class history resonate deeply with the themes in my practice, particularly around labour and the politics of the body.
By situating this work in Darlington, I see the opportunity to bridge local histories with contemporary conversations around identity and making. I will look to collaborate with local metalworkers, fabricators and community groups to investigate shared experiences around craft, labour and self-expression, especially voices that are often underrepresented in mainstream art spaces. I also aim to offer MIG and TIG welding teaching workshops to anyone who identifies as working class, a woman or part of the lgbtqia+ community.
Through exhibitions, open studios and public workshops, I would aim to make the process as visible and inclusive as the final outcome.
I make work that explores questions of identity, belief and reality in the digital age.
Exposed to Polish and Catholic influences in early childhood, I examine belief and its origins, with a particular interest in the way it is shaped and transformed by both physical and digital spaces.
My installation work is largely made of mild steel, a material primarily used for construction and fabrication purposes. Its strength and durability root the work in a familiar sensorial reality. The forms I make give shape to abstract and symbolic environments, reminiscent of the safe spaces in which identities are formed in childhood. The work I make investigates how belief forms when subjected to different realities and crucially, seeks to create an environment in which one is left to question the structural integrity of one’s own belief systems.
