The Dover Prize Funding
If you are successful and receive the £10,000 bursary, please tell us what you would use the funding for. Explain how this award will help move your artistic practice forward and what you hope to achieve. (350 words)
My background is one of scientific illustration and fine art painting. However, If successful, I would use the money to explore new and better materials and methodology to develop my new Sciart work to a high quality finish and presentation. The artworks would be communicating the importance of clean water by featuring the patterns in dried water drops as seen through the microscope. The artworks I have created so far are prototypes, which were successfully exhibited at the Nature in Art Museum, Gloucester in 2022 as part of my PH.D. The illuminated painted sculptures as prototypes are made of recycled CD cases which greatly restricts the scale of work. I would relish the opportunity to create larger pieces and extend into engraving as well as painting. This award would give me possibility of reaching a new audience with a unique way of visualising water.
The Dover Prize Fund has its roots in Darlington. Please explain how you believe your work might enhance and raise the profile of the creative arts in the area. (200 words)
To communicate science through art in a distinctive and dramatic way, will not only pique curiosity for the artworks but also raise awareness of a new science (also researched by the artist) I would hope a selected venue could be open for Darlington local schools, whom I would encourage to send me selected water samples, which would be worked in the lab and displayed as photomicrographs in the exhibition. This should hopefully inspire and excite both the students and their parents, thus raising the profile of the creative arts in the area,
