This award will certainly help me go forward. I have so many ideas I want to actually make, however, quite often, I come across with financial problem to achieve. Although I can do small experiments, when it come to a final piece, especially when I want to make in a large scale, I cannot, and a lack of space as well. I have a basic idea I want to develop and create a new work for this opportunity. I am interested in transparency in both concept and materials. I often use heat, magnet, glass, and copper. And I like to use simple chemistry and physics in my work, which is always fun and discover new things. In this project, I want to focus on electromagnetic. I would like to create domino piece that can stand up again once all fell down by using electromagnetic. It will be interactive as participants can push down the domino if they want to. And it will be a large scale. On my previous work, I used cassettes tapes (please see the image attached). When I was installing them, I could see the domino effects, and become more curious to create this work in a large scale. I believe this bursary and support from your organisation will help this happen with my rigid intent, and lead me to the achievement I am aiming for.
I would use the funding for:
• Travel – I am based in London, so the cost of trains.
• Training or workshops – I may need to skill up myself to carry out this project. I am happy to hold workshops.
• Materials or equipment – Definitely I need to get materials and equipment.
• Research trips – I have contacted a technician in Imperial College who may be happy to assist me to develop my
work. But also I would like to research around the roots of Darlington that can connect to my work.
• Development or production costs for final presentation. – Extra costs for delivery, equipment to set up the
work for an exhibition will be necessary.
In Darlington, already so many art related things are happening. But my work is unique. I believe I can add a bit of spice, and introduce a new way of experiencing and making art in the local community. I want to remove a pre-concept of ART. You don’t have to be a well-knowledge educated person to enjoy and involve in art. It is for everyone. I want to be a part of, and contribute to this development of art in Darlington.
My work is very various and use many kinds of media, from installation work, sculpture, photography, glass, printmaking, video, performance, to poem. I don’t want to limit myself in a certain field because I am interested in materials themselves. If I find something curious, I experiment. So my work involves many experiments from which I discover and learn. It never ends. But as mentioned earlier, I am interested in transparency. So transparent force like magnetic and heat are always in my mind. The latest one was my cassette tapes piece with heat for ‘In the thick of things’ at APT Gallery in Deptford, London.
