We are applying as an artistic duo. Adelina Apetrei, who has a background in film, draws on her personal experiences in a post-communist country. She is particularly interested in the role of various institutions and machinery and their dynamics of power. Additionally, she works with sculpture, reimagining reality by using found objects in her projects to create non-linear narratives.
Angelos Kotzias, a multidisciplinary artist from Greece, focuses on approaching his cultural and ethnic background through personal experience. He emphasizes the importance of combating cultural amnesia and naivety towards identity.
We aim to focus on independent practice while also connecting and collaborating on projects as a duo. We would like to use this bursary to rent a studio space in London, where we are currently based. Our plans include working on community projects and engaging in cultural and artistic activities. We want to create workshops and provide a space for others to join us. Similar to the I Spot I See video, we are still interested in exploring nature, as well as documenting and learning from our experiences.
Adelina Apetrei and Agelos Kotzias, an artistic duo with the goal of creating a film together, embark on a day trip to Dover, Kent. Their journey explores the importance of connecting with nature while living in a metropolis far removed from natural landscapes. They highlight the importance of gazing at the horizon without any human-made structures obstructing the view. This short film serves as an exercise in observing nature, emphasising the need to be present in the moment and using imagination to identify various elements of the natural world. The artists aim to capture the essence of nature, but as the video progresses, the roles begin to shift, and nature captivates the attention of the two artists. Using camcorders and sound recorders, the filmmakers succeed in documenting the raw beauty of nature, focusing on observing and appreciating it without altering the reality of the experience.
We are organising a group exhibition titled “In Pursuit of Accession,” which will take place from May 7th to May 15th at the Stash Gallery in Vout-o-Reenee’s. This is a collective exhibition featuring paintings inspired by the spiritual-themed artworks of the Middle Ages and exploring how these themes relate to our contemporary context.
